Here’s a quick tutorial on how to get cartoon style motion blur for your comics. Instead of using the built in motion blur that many digital art programs have…
*NOTE: This tutorial only works with programs that have layer masks like Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop. It does not work with Procreate, though with some ingenuity and creativity, you can find a work around.
Tutorial
- Create a new layer for your at with the image merged to one layer
- Set the layer opacity to 50%
- Offset the entire layer in the direction of motion
- While selecting your offset layer, set the layer to Layer Mask → Mask Outside Selection
- Now, select the layer mask portion of your layer, which should be all black
- Select an airbrush and use a pure white color
- Color over the areas where you want the motion blur mask to show through.
- You can errase or lighten those areas by adding black onto the layer mask color
Done!
