Introduction

I’m 24 years old and I live in my parent’s house. I’ve had the same bedroom - the same twin sized bed, mattress, and desk since I was 8 years old (in the 3rd grade), and its been long past due since an upgrade. Here’s what I did, what I thought was worth it, and what you can pass on.
Keep in mind I didn’t buy all of this at once. This room makeover took place over a period of 6-7 months where I’ve been sporadically adding and reorganizing things in my room.
The TL;DR In total I spent $2,288.88 (over a period of 6 months), but I could’ve made it work with just the best stuff at $1,485.71. Think around $380 dollars a month for the full price and $250 monthly for just the “best stuff”.

  • Mini fridge - The mini fridge is really luxurious but I haven’t gotten much use out of it. It lives in my closet. Good for if you’re really skinny or prone to skipping meals. The proximity of food will help you eat more.
    • What I would get instead: Nothing. I would just pass on this entirely
  • Webcam - I bought an expensive webcam thinking the higher quality would do me some good. But I use it so little, just a cheap webcam would’ve been just as adequate.
    • What I would get instead: cheaper webcam (<$30)
  • White paint - The paint was so expensive 😵‍💫. The white paint on the wall is GREAT in the winter, but it heats up my room like a mf in the spring and summer. It can get up to 80 degrees in my room, way hotter than it would when my walls were off white/beige. If you live in a hot area like me, I would skip this one.
    • Instead: Stick on wallpaper to give your room some character.
  • 2 pillows - The two pillows I bought are lumpy and cheap. They’re a good bargain if you only want to use the pillows as decoration (which I don’t). For the pillow cases - I wish I got ones that had a zipper on them instead. The ones I have always fall off.
    • Instead: Invest in nicer, more expensive pillows
  • Sketchboard pro - You can think of a sketchboard pro like a really large case for an iPad that expands its surface area around 5 inches on each side to give your arm somewhere to rest when you draw. It was one of the items I bought when I was fighting my art rut. Wasn’t really worth it though, especially since it was so expensive.
When its more than just art block
    • Instead: Adjustable laptop stand (and use it as an iPad stand)

  • monitor light bar - Monitor light bar >>>>> desk lamp any day. It doesn’t take up any desk space, and the light is always shining on the right spot - just in front of my monitor - but without the glare.
  • plastic storage bins (6 pack) - Great for organizing all the small random stuff you may find in your room while cleaning, (that you want to keep) but don’t know what to do with. I have a bin for my plushies, washi tape, and my summer swim suits.
  • Standing desk (55” x 28”) - I LOVE my huge new desk. So much room for drawing, writing, and hoarding small items.
  • Mattress (queen sized) - So comfy. TBH I had low expectations for a foam mattress I bought off of Amazon, but its quite nice. Compared to the twin sized mattress I used to have, I can finally stretch my legs like a real adult. Feels good.
  • Wireless iPhone Charger - TBH I always thought of wireless chargers as kind gimick-y before, but having one, my phone is almost always on full charge nowadays because I never forget to charge it. Anytime I’m sitting at my desk, I put my phone on the wireless charger.
  • Duvet cover - Its so easy for me to was my sheets now that I don’t have to stuff a huge duvet into the washing machine. Look up the burrito method for putting on a duvet cover.

Items I owned already that are worth a shout out

  • Keyboard with multiple channels
  • Desk clock with USB charging ports
  • LED lights (below my bed)
  • BOSE speaker
  • Black out curtains !!!
